A Game Too Far

This was the Championship decider between the two best teams in the league games this season. Upeermill were in the box seat, with the Angels needing to win to win the title. Briefly we were in pole position as we started brightly and created the first few chances, Leoni scored our opener but as Upermill were under pressure we had other chances to extend the lead. For the first 20 minutes we were on top but couldn't get a killer second and Uppermill started to creep into the game.

Uppermill started picking up second ball and created half chances, but the defence was solid and it wasn't until a complete botch up that we conceded, we had several chances to clear in midfield and didn't then a specatively shot somehow found the corner of the net, it was like a balloon deflating as all the hard work was undone. Uppermill took this and started to spread it about and scored a good second goal. At 2-1 down at half time the girls looked spent as they knew they needed 2 goals to win the league.

The next goal was crucial as Uppermill got it with a long range drive and at this stage could have scored several more as they were on top. We started to substitute to mix up the game to give them more to think about. It worked as Danni who is getting back to form after her long injury had a shot that Leoni touched in. We gave a soft free kick away and the long range looped shot went over Natz. Our reaction was to roll up our sleeves and Leoni had a brilliant overhead effort which hit the bar. The game was more open and we were giving as much as we got and although the girls went 5-2 down we carried on and Monty was unlucky to see a deserved goal hit the inside of the post.

The last 10 minutes was like treading water, and we could see it on the girls faces. Totally disappointed but they should remember that they had gauranteed second spot and we lost to the Champions. They lost 1 league game all season so they deserved to be Champions and if that's the case we deserved to be runners up. We did the huddle because the girls needed to be re-assured that Steve and Ian are so proud of the achievement. The news that both Kayleigh and Leoni won the golden boot award to go with the runners-up trophy.
