Following on from a very tough game against our "A" team, the boys needed to call on their plentiful reserves of energy as we took to the field against Failsworth West Juniors.
It looked as though we may be in for a tough time as the Failsworth West team included some faces from last year's strong "A" team squad. They also were coming off the back of a 4-0 win in their first fixture & looked as though they were ready for the challenge of facing our boys.
We were struggling a little, as Kieren was out with a badly sprained ankle & Marcel was struggling with a painful foot injury. Even though Kieren wanted to play, I had to over rule him for his own good, but Marcel was able to soldier on despite the obvious discomfort.
We started to dominate the game straight from the kick off & went close on a few occasions in the opening 5 mins.
The breakthrough came after 6 mins when Adam collected the ball on the half way line, before charging forward & unleashing an unstoppable shot high into the top corner of the net...1-0.
More pressure followed, but we couldn't convert the many chances we were producing into goals. Not until the last minute before half time, when Callum found Adam, who produced another great finish, this time with his left foot. 2-0 HT
The 2nd half was a different story. I think we had broken the resistance of the Failsworth team & we started to get more time on the ball. It was great to watch all our boys try all the tricks they see their favourite players doing & they are fast becoming very adept at themselves. It wasn't showboating by our team, just young 9 year old kids producing skills that are a delight to watch.
It must have been demoralising for our opponents as we built up wave after wave of attacks, spreading the ball from one side to another.
The sum total of that superb 2nd half performance was another 5 goals.... 2 more for Adam, 2 for his brother Jack & 1 for Joe, who was starting to enjoy himself after a quiet start.
The game ended 7-0, which gave us 2 wins from 2 on the opening day. There were superb performances again from the top 3 players in the 1st game (Callum, Jack C & Charlie), & they were well supported in this game by Jack & Adam who were on fire running rings around the Failsworth defence.
The man of the match could have been any one from those 5, but it ultimately went to Adam for his 4 goals & 3 assists. A great start to our new campaign.... Well done boys!!!
